Boys at the Canal

The Savannah River is 1.5 miles down a broad sidewalk from my mom's house. The Headgates there are the beginning of an old canal. I've been running on the levee that divides the river from the canal since we moved to Augusta, 12 years ago. It's still one of my favorite places to run in the world. (Also on the list of favorites would have to be downtown Paris, around the mountaintop that Cortona (Italy) sits on and the farmlands all around Schweinfurt, despite the steaming mounds of composted animal waste you have to pass.)
Yesterday I went for a run down there while Mom took the boys on a walk. Afterwards I tried to take some pictures of the boys exploring. I think I need to glue some googly eyes on my camera, though. The boys are so used to me having the camera in front of my face they refuse to look at me if I have that thing up. I think Joshua looked up maybe 4 times total, which is why I have so few photos of him in general, compared with Caleb. Being a photographer and mom is great, but it doesn't make for good, traditional, smiley portraits.

Twinbelly- 15 weeks, 3 days, Differences between Twins/Singletons

Definitely getting bigger.
Strange fact about being pregnant with twins or multiples: you gain a lot of weight in the first and third trimesters, whereas when pregnant with a singleton, a mother sees the largest weight gain in the second trimester. Of course this makes me feel better, seeing as I have already exchanged my wardrobe for the one lurking in the dusty box that's been garage-bound for a whole 19 months. Oh well. I think I've gained around 15 pounds. According to some very reliable researchers, I should have gained between 21 and 26 pounds by now, in order to reach my goal of 50- 60 pounds of overall weight gain. So I'm getting there. These researchers have a clinically proven program for women pregnant with multiples in order to help the babies reach optimal birth weight.
Of course the prospect of gaining this much weight (and eating this much- 3,500 calories a day, 176 g of protein) is daunting to me. I could blame our society for its focus on trim figures as the ideal for women, even pregnant ones. But it's me too, I value a fit body and work towards making sure I am healthy. This new focus on eating more, instead of limiting portion size, is difficult to get used to. It is sort of a relief, but I can only eat so much meat in a day. But I am reminded constantly in all of these twin books, and by my loving husband, that I am feeding the babies, not just my pants size. That their brain development depends on the amount of healthy fats I eat. That these 9 months, though short in my life, are the most important (developmentally) in the babies' lives. And that I have the rest of my life to whip this body into shape.
I didn't realize this other difference between singleton pregnancies and multiples pregnancies: that a mother of one baby can gain between 15 and 50 pounds and still produce a healthy weight baby of 7 and a half pounds. But for a mother of twins can not provide the essentials with her own body weight and brain fat for two healthy babies- which is one reason that twins are often Low Birth Weight babies.
There are two risks associated with carrying multiples that make this pregnancy a "high-risk" pregnancy even though there is nothing else "risky" going on. One is Low Birth Weight and the other is Pre-Term Labor. I can not do much to determine when I go into labor, besides the typical, "Lie Down. Drink Water. Etc." But I can do my best to help my babies have a healthy weight for their gestational age.
I'm pretty sure I haven't reached 176 g of protein a day yet, but I'm trying. And in an effort toward that goal, I'm going to go get a snack before I go to bed. Anyone ever tried liver pate? It has a lot of iron and protein, both of which are desired by my babies, if not by me.

Easter Morning

I was really excited for Easter this year. At my OCF Bible Study we've been studying Jesus' final week, the week leading up to and including the crucifixion. We've also had a time of fasting during the Lenten season. For once in my Christian life, I've felt prepared for Easter- instead of it sneaking up on me. I have heard that Easter is the most important holiday for a follower of Jesus. And I understand why it is true, but we just don't get ready for it, the way that we prepare weeks in advance for Christmas. And while Jesus' birth was a momentous and miraculous event, His death and resurrection are what broke the bonds of sin and the reason I have hope in eternal life with God. So spending 6 short weeks focusing on what Christ did for us, and celebrating the victory of sin and death that He accomplished (and offers to us) was a great experience. I see now why the Lenten season exists, even if it is misunderstood/misused by some.
I was so excited for Easter day, that I got up early, got ready and got the boys ready with enough time to take pictures before breakfast at church. (Thanks to my good friend, Claire, for taking the photos.) The boys' suits are a wee bit big, but I couldn't resist putting them on. I had a hard time not following them around with the camera all day. They look cute, though, don't they?

Easter eggs with little friends

The Saturday before Easter we went over to Michelle's to decorate then hunt for eggs with some little friends. The day was beautiful and with six toddlers, pretty exciting and a little messy. In regards to the egg dying, Natalie said what I was thinking: "Well, maybe it will go better next year. They'll be older. But wait, isn't that what we said last year?"

Ellie and Caleb decorating eggs
Miss Brooke proud of her booty:
Joshua did not want to hunt on the porch with the littler girls. But the toddlers had already scooped up all the eggs in the yard by the time Joshua got down there. I looked over and saw kind-hearted Natalie tossing down eggs to Joshua. He would turn and look in the grass, pick up the couple of eggs he saw, then turn back to his benefactor, signing please, please. (Unfortunately his vocalization of this polite word sounds like "Maaa, Maaa, Maa." So it's kind of more annoying than his just not saying please.)
Caleb and Ellie vying for the same egg, with smiles, though.
Little Saedi found some yummy candy and took advantage
The "older" kids, proud of their full buckets.

Strange, that run felt great!

Our good friends Jen and Angus came over this morning so that I could sneak off for a run. It felt surprisingly easy and I was able to finish 7 miles with a 9:27 pace. This is way faster than last week and there was no pain, like a couple of weeks ago. I'm encouraged and it was so fun, that I rethought my decision to not run the half marathon in Nashville in a few weeks. But I think I should stick with my plans to go home for the end of April, and give my body a break.
Because blog posts are supposed to have pictures here are two of my favorite little boys, a tree climber and a sweaty sleeper.

What twins at 12 weeks look like

Warning, if you scroll down, you'll see some G rated but bare belly shots.

12 weeks, 5 days.
Just for comparison the next shot is from when I was 4 weeks pregnant:
And again, 12 weeks, 5 days:
And just for fun/vanity, I sucked in for the next shot. Crazy how little those babies can look.

Renovating the Sandbox

It's getting warmer (finally) and Caleb keeps asking to play in the sand. Last week we emptied the box of the old, wet, dirty sand with leaves and spiderwebs and who knows what else, and then went shopping.
First we headed to the fabric store to buy some cheap, plain vinyl and ended up buying the only kind that wasn't on sale. (Because Joshua fell in love with the choo-choo kind, and really he asks for so little.) Then we headed over to Toys R Us for some special sand. I'd witnessed it a friend's house- the grains are bigger and they don't stick to the kids at all. Way cleaner, as far as sand goes. It really is better and it's not any more expensive.
While Joshua napped, Caleb and I got busy.

First we had to cut the vinyl and staple it to the inside of the box. (There's no liner to the box and the icky things that crawled up into the sand grossed me out last year.) Caleb likes scissor-duty.

Then came the sand dump. It was pretty heavy for a tot.
And as soon as we emptied our two bags in (we'll need a couple more), Caleb climbed right in. Can you tell what he's about to do in the picture below?
If you guessed "throw that sand right at his Mama and her nice camera" you were right. Then he decided to lay down in the cool sand for a nap.
Finally he lined up his sand toys and buckets for a good hose-washing.

Knox's birthday

I forgot to post these pictures of my nephew Knox's first birthday. These are more than a month old, but still cute.

Not everyone (including Joshua with my mom, and Caleb with Katie, below) were as excited as Knox about his mountain of presents (above).

Knox was also baptized and dedicated to the Lord the day at church the day after his birthday party. It was a sweet ceremony with Knox behaving beautifully (which I can only imagine was the grace of God) as he sat sweetly and received the water sprinkled on his head without a cry.

Do I have to answer that last one? Funny things Caleb says and asks

I have two babies in my belly, too. Their names are Baby Zaccheus and Baby Zai. (Not sure how to spell it, pronounced with a long I.) What are your babies' names, Mama?

My babies came out. They are on the kitchen floor, do you want them?
When are your babies coming out?
Will the babies cry? Why?

Joshua: I want a doughnut. (Sounds like I unna dough-dough.)
Caleb: No, Joshua. We can't have a doughnut today because it's not Sunday. Doughnuts are a special treat.

How did Dada get you pregnant?
